495 taxi drivers and delivery men tested positive for Covid-19 in Telangana: report | Hyderabad News

HYDERABAD: State taxi drivers and food delivery people have borne the brunt of the coronavirus with up to 495 of them testing positive for Covid-19.
The figures were leaked in a report from the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union on Sunday. The organization, which includes taxi drivers and delivery men from various organizations, said that so far, four deaths have been reported among workers who exposed themselves to the virus while on duty.
Mr Kiran Kumar, a 36-year-old taxi driver, was among four people who succumbed to the virus earlier this week. Kumar’s sister, G Surekha, said: “My brother has worked as a taxi driver for over a decade. He was the sole breadwinner in the family. There are several people commuting in cabs, and we don’t know how and when he was exposed to the virus. ”
“We first admitted him to a private hospital, but since we couldn’t pay the bills, we had to transfer him to TIMS in Gachibowli. Neither the government nor the taxi company have come forward to help us pay the hospital bills or support us in any way until now, ”she said.
“These workers and their families who are exposed to the virus have no health insurance or financial assistance from the government or the companies that hired them.
We call on the government to advise app-based companies to provide health insurance and vaccination to these workers and their families as a priority, ”said Shaik Salauddin, chairman of Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union.
