Black taxi drivers urged to look for dishonored contactless check payments

A major black taxi payment provider has urged drivers to check EVERY receipt to guarantee payment, due to an increase in contactless payment spot checks used by banks.

Payment provider, CMT UKwhich claims to provide card payment solutions for 40% of the entire London fleet, issued the warning in a recent newsletter to taxi drivers after an honest passenger got in touch to question the message “DECL- INSERT CARD” on their receipt.

A CMT spokesperson wrote, “We want to remind you to check your receipts, every receipt. With the increase in demand for contactless payments and the higher limit of contactless payments, there are more and more DECL-INSERT CARD results in taxis and stores across the country.

“It’s not our system that declines the payment, it’s the card issuer that declines the payment.”

The West London-based card solutions company went on to detail the reasoning behind the security feature. It was explained that without spot checks, a stolen card could, if issuers did not limit the number of consecutive contactless payments, be used for fraud indefinitely.

It was pointed out that the DECL-INSERT CARD error does not mean that the passenger lacks funds in the account. The same card can be used via chip and PIN.

The CMT spokesperson added, “For your reference, here is a photo of part of a receipt, tweeted to us by a passenger who noticed his payment had been declined and wanted to do what he needed by the driver. While this gesture of goodwill is not an isolated incident, it cannot be relied upon.

“We therefore ask that you please check your receipts, every receipt so that you receive the money you have earned. Remember that if a payment is declined, no money is taken from the holder of card, so no money can be paid to you.”
