The Lieutenant Governor of the National Capital, VK Saxena, has launched a training program for 50 female taxi drivers in the city to increase the ratio of female drivers in the public transport sector. LG also reported 40 electric taxis with female drivers at the event held at the Institute of Driving and Traffic Research (IDTR) in Sarai Kale Khan. The event was attended by Gautam Gambhir, BJP MP for East Delhi, Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar and other senior officials.

During the event, Saxena said the driver training for female drivers was in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for the empowerment of women. He added that independence would remain incomplete without women’s “economic freedom” or autonomy.

The driver training program for women taxi drivers will open up new job opportunities for women and empower them. “I hope the public transport sector in Delhi will have 50% female drivers in the coming years,” Saxena said.

The cost of the training will be borne 50/50 by the Direction des Transports and the taxi aggregators. Trained drivers will be taken from the fleet of aggregators who have sponsored them. Under this program, 1,000 women will receive training and secure employment over the next year.

Women who take advantage of this program can register directly with the transport department or they can be enlisted by private taxi aggregators. Saxena also praised electric car fleet aggregator Blu Smart for recruiting female drivers. Although these cars contribute to the protection of the environment, female taxi drivers will ensure the safety of passengers.
