Hawaii residents pay less for car insurance: study

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Not only do Hawaii drivers enjoy near-perfect weather year-round, but they also have one of the lowest car insurance rates in the country.

According to a recent study by Ensurean online website comparing auto insurance, Hawaii residents pay $122 per month for the state’s minimum auto insurance.

With current inflation and gas prices hitting a new high, many drivers are looking for cheap car insurance.

Through their research, Insurify found that Farmers provide Hawaii residents with the best, lowest average car insurance rates.

They found that Farmers policyholders pay insurance premiums of $108 per month. Coming in at $14 cheaper than average.

Drivers in Hawaii who currently have an at-fault accident on their driving record pay 55.43% more on average than drivers with a clean record.

The minimum coverage limits required by Hawaii State law are $20,000 for the injury or death of a single person involved in a motor vehicle accident and $40,000 for the injury or death of several people.

Insurers list this coverage at 20/40, indicating the limits of each minimum. In the event of an accident, liability insurance protects you up to the policy limit. Damages above the policy limit of $40,000 are your responsibility.

Having a clean driving record can also help keep car insurance low. Through the study, they discovered that 82% of Hawaii drivers had a clean record.

Another factor that could increase car insurance premiums is having a DUI. Drivers in Hawaii with a DUI on their driving record pay an average of 51.09% more than drivers with a clean record.

Those with a speeding ticket on their driving history pay an average of 55.43% more than drivers with a clean record.
