International Driving Permit – Why do you need it, why and how much does it cost?

When you plan to drive a car abroad, you will need to acquire an International Driving Permit (IDP).

This is an additional license that drivers will need to have in addition to their full UK driving licence.

This also applies when renting a car when you are abroad and is a legal requirement in a number of countries around the world.

Here’s everything you need to know about it.

What is an International Driving Permit?

The International Driving Permit will allow you to drive in most overseas countries.

It is recommended or required in more than 140 countries around the world, including the United States, Hong Kong and Brazil.

In some countries it is a legal requirement to allow you to drive, while in other countries it may be a mandatory requirement of car rental companies.

An IDP is essentially an official, multilingual translation of your driving license and is recognized worldwide, valid for 12 months.

You can only get an IDP three months before you need it.

How to get an IDP?

Acquiring an IDP is a simplistic process and can be done online through sites such as the post office or RAC

To receive an IDP you must be 18 or over and have a valid UK driving licence.

To apply, all you need to do is:

  • Your full UK driving license – Photo card or old paper version of the license
  • Application fees
  • A passport size photo signed on the back
  • Proof of identity, e.g. passport

It costs between £5.50 and £8 to apply for a permit.
