MoRTH Standardizes International Driver’s Permit Issuance Process, Auto News, ET Auto

New Delhi: The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has standardized the process for issuing the International Driving Permit across the country in line with the Convention on International Road Traffic 1949. The ministry, in a notification on Monday, said said the provision for the QR code to link between the International Driving Permit (IDP) and the driver’s license has also been made.

Currently, the format, size, pattern, color, etc. IDPs issued differ from state to state in India. For this reason, many citizens face difficulties with their respective IDPs in foreign countries.

“The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways issued a notification on August 26, 2022 for greater facilitation of citizens in the issue of IDPs across the country.

“Now through this amendment, the format, size, color, etc. of the IDP have been standardized for issuance across India, and in line with the Geneva Convention,” he said. .

India, as a signatory to the Convention on International Road Traffic, 1949 (Geneva Convention), is bound to issue an IDP as provided by that Convention, for acceptance thereof on a reciprocal basis with other countries.

According to the notification, a comparison of vehicle classes in various Central Motor Vehicle Conventions and Rules 1989 has also been added to facilitate regulators.

Phone and email support numbers were also provided, the notification added.
