Kolkata Traffic Police is launching a gender awareness program for city taxi and cab drivers to ensure female passengers can safely navigate in app-based taxis and taxis, even during the night. The initiative will be deployed by Kolkata Traffic Police Southeast Guard officers from Tuesday.
The initiative will be jointly led by the Kolkata Police Training Academy and Kolkata Traffic Police officers, who will together train taxi, cab and auto rickshaw drivers to behave properly with female passengers, especially at night.
The city has seen several incidents of taxi drivers misbehaving or harassing female passengers in the past, and so this initiative aims to bring about change. “Over the past two years, we have witnessed several incidents of app taxi drivers misbehaving with female passengers. There are cases of women being harassed by taxi drivers, ”a senior police official told PTI. “So to ensure that the city is safe for commuter women, we will start the South East Traffic Guard training program,” he added.
After the successful completion of this program, the Kolkata traffic police will also conduct such training programs for other traffic officers, the officer informed.
The officers also plan to train bus drivers after training the application taxi drivers, and upon completion of the training, the drivers will receive a certificate. They will also receive a sticker stating – This Car Respects Women – which they will need to stick on the windshields of their vehicles. The main objective of the initiative is to reduce the number of crimes against female passengers in the city.
