A quarter of Americans plan to go on vacation outside the United States in the next 18 months, according to a new AAA survey, while 80% have already taken a trip abroad and 2 in 5 – nearly 77 million adults – rented or used a vehicle while abroad.

Sales of international driver’s licenses, which can help U.S. travelers licensed to rent cars overseas, have climbed 33% in the past five years, according to the AAA.

“AAA has discovered that road travel is increasingly attractive to US travelers overseas,” Paula Twidale, vice president of AAA Travel, said in a statement. Car travel responds to travelers’ desire for “experiential travel” and “a means to engage intimately with their destination,” she added.

While a valid US driver’s license may be all a vacationer needs to hire a car in some major foreign destinations, many other countries do not recognize them without an “IDP,” as the documents are known. In most international jurisdictions, it is illegal to drive without a valid license and without insurance coverage.

The AAA and the American Automobile Touring Alliance are the only organizations authorized by the Department of State to issue IDPs. Information and IDP requests are available online at the AAA and AATA websites.

“Travelers can easily apply for an international driver‘s license with an application accessible online or in person at AAA, whether they are members or not,” Twidale said. “The nominal $ 20 fee is a small price to pay for peace of mind when traveling internationally.”

The AAA also released findings on where all of these American jet-setters – drivers and non-drivers – should go through the end of 2020. Long-standing popular European urban destinations and warm tropics still lead the way. listing.
