Taxi drivers who have been fined for illegal parking say they are being penalized because the council is doing nothing to fix the mess at the city’s taxi ranks.

Worcester taxi drivers were fined by West Mercia Police for parking outside designated taxi ranks in the city, but the drivers blamed Worcester City Council for failing to stop taxis from private hire clogging the city’s roads.

Taxi ranks in Foregate Street and St Swithin’s Street regularly overflow and taxis waiting outside the rows for revelers leaving clubs and bars in the narrow New Street have resulted in police fines.

City taxi driver Mohammad Sajad told councilors that loopholes in the law which allowed taxis to license any council in the country to ply their trade in Worcester meant more than 250 taxis got off in town most weekends.

Mr Sajad said this forced the city’s hackney taxi drivers – who had received taxi licenses from Worcester City Council – to park outside the rows to wait for passengers, which meant they risked fines from the police.

Cllr Simon Cronin said the council was letting taxi drivers down who continually had to risk a fine from the police because they didn’t have a place to park.

“Actually, I requested [at the last meeting committee meeting in June] that enforcement should be actively pursued to end the misuse of ranks which at the time was an “occasional problem”, but over the summer this enforcement did not occur. We now have very serious problems.

“The New Street rows are regularly blocked by private vehicles and taxi drivers are ticketed by the police for being overridden on the double yellow lines,” he told the licensing and security committee. environmental health at a meeting in the Guildhall in September. 27.

“Our supply of taxis in this city is hampered by poor use of ranks.

“It causes problems for our citizens who cannot find taxis and taxis cannot stop anywhere near where they are supposed to be because these places are blocked and they are afraid to get taxis. tickets.”
